Matariki Celelbration

      Matariki

What Is Matariki
Matariki symbols the Maori new year in june.  People celebrate it in New Zealand.  Matariki is the seven brightest and clearest stars in the sky, there is actually 100 stars but you can only see seven.  They're in a group/bundle.  You can only see the stars when its is about half an hour to dawn before the vanish or disappear

How do the people celebrate Matariki
The way people celebrate Matariki is some people have a kite festival.  A kite festival is when lots of people go somewhere and fly kites (you don’t have to fly a kite).  Some people have a pukana chellong or a powhiri to welcome people and they can have lots of other things.

How my class celebrated matariki.
My class and my teacher Miss Hill's celebrated matariki by making a manu tukutuku we had buddies but my buddy Navaron wasn't here so I did it all by myself it was hard and challenging.  We used Harakeke, toe toe, wool and a little piece of black paper for the top.  We go to decorate our black paper so it wasn't plane and boring.  We have to divide our toe toe into 3 equal parts mine was 32 each part.  Then MIss Hill’s cut my toe toe.  Once she had cut it I had to put the middle stick on the table and put the other two on a side each so it went up diagonally (it looks like a triangle now) Then I got a piece of white wool and tied the top of my toe toes together so it wouldn't move and so it was stable.  Then I had to cut some pieces of harakeke to put across my manu toku toku.  Then I had to tie it to the toe toe so it would stay.  I tied it with two pieces of wool I chose purple and black for my middle one.  For my sides I chose  black and white wool.  When I was done I was so so so tired.  I was thankful that I had finished.  With the leftover pieces of the harakeke and toetoe We cut up and put it under the other harakeke bushed for nutrients and because it would help it grow.

The hardest part for me was when you had to tie the top of the toe toes together because I didn't have a buddy to hold it for me.  The easiest part was the black piece of paper because all you needed to do was decorate it and hot glue gun it to the manu tukutuku.   I had fun making my manu tukutuku.
